Sam Barrington joins USF football radio team

USF announced Friday that former Bulls LB Sam Barrington will join its official radio broadcast team this season as analyst.

Barrington, a Packers seventh-round draft pick in 2013 who recently wrapped up a half-decade NFL career, replaces Mark Robinson, who stepped down after 21 seasons in the booth. Barrington joins Jim Louk, the only play-by-play man in program history.

"We are thrilled to have Sam Barrington join Jim Louk and our radio team on broadcasts of USF football," new USF vice president of athletics Michael Kelly said in a school news release.

"I think Bulls fans will be very excited to have the voice of such a respected and well-loved former member of our program join our weekly game broadcasts and radio show. Sam brings not only a wealth of football knowledge but great insight and perspective on our program, and we are excited to welcome him back to the team."

Barrington, who lettered four seasons for USF (2009-12), remains 10th on the program's career tackles list (258). His vagabond NFL career included stints on the official rosters of the Packers, Chiefs and Saints.

The school also announced former Times and Tampa Tribune sports reporter Joey Johnston returns for his second year as sideline reporter. Rock Riley, who currently hosts an afternoon sports-talk show on 1040-AM, again joins Jim Lighthall and Darek Sharp on the pre- and post-game shows.

USF opens its season at home Sept. 1 against Elon. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
