UPDATE: Bobby Joe Long is executed in silence

STARKE — Bobby Joe Long woke up at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, on what will likely be the last day of his existence.

The serial killer who terrorized Tampa in the 1980s and killed at least eight women is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison.

He had no visitors, state officials said. No spiritual adviser visited him.

Long, 65, had his last meal at 9:30 a.m. He ate a roast beef sandwich, bacon, French fries and soda as his last meal.

His demeanor was described as “calm, quiet” at a news conference held outside the prison.

Long confessed to 10 slayings but has hinted at more. He is also believed to have attacked dozens in South Florida, where he was known as the “Classified Ad Rapist.”

He will be put to death for just one of those murders: Michelle Denise Simms, a former beauty pageant contestant from California. Her nude body was discovered on May 27, 1984, near an Interstate 4 overpass by Plant City. She was bound with a rope and her throat had been cut.

Long was first sentenced to die in 1985. He has spent 34 years on Florida’s death row, among the longest of any inmate.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Long’s death warrant on April 24, making it the first death sentence the governor has authorized since he took office in January.
