A Clearwater man died Saturday night after his car was hit from behind by another on the Bayside Bridge.

According to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol, Joseph Poblete, 45, was driving a 2003 Toyota sports utility vehicle southbound on the bridge. With him in the car was Laurie Poblete, 34, also of Clearwater.

For reasons that remain unclear to authorities, Joseph Poblete’s car slowed. It was then hit from behind by a 2008 Lexus sedan driven by Melissa Calderon, 37, of Clearwater, the release said.

After impact, Joseph Poblete’s car spun and flipped “multiple times,” the release said.

Joseph Poblete was taken to Northside Hospital, where he died from injuries sustained in the crash, the release said.

Laurie Poblete was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with serious injuries.

Calderon was unharmed in the crash, the release said.

Charges in the incident are pending.
